The Maryland World of Pets Expo, held annually at the Maryland State Fair Grounds, is an entertaining and educational event for pet enthusiasts.

The three-day event will be held Jan. 26-28, and features a full line-up of educational workshops, shows, demonstrations, and more for the whole family. Well-socialized pets are also invited to attend, said event creator Jeanne Emge.

The expo, which started in 2002, “has information on just about every kind of pet,” and is the “largest of its kind on the East Coast,” according to Emge.

“If you are thinking about getting a pet, it’s a really great place to come as a family and talk to experts, who have, or care for different kinds of pets,” she said.

The seminars and demonstrations will cover a variety of topics, including caring for birds, aquatic turtles, miniature horses and alpacas. Several guests speakers will also give dog obedience training demonstrations. Workshops, which are an additional cost, range from pet CPR and First Aid to parrot behavior. Advanced registration is required for all workshops.

Another highlight of the event, Emge said, is the vendors who sell specialty items for pets, like treats, clothing, food, toys and artwork.

“We have a lot of vendors that come from all over the county,” she said.  “A lot of them make and sell products that you won’t find in a regular retail store, it’s quite the shopping experience.”

Attendees searching for a new pet will also have the opportunity to speak to representatives from local rescues and shelters.

“Lots of people come [to the expo] hoping to find their forever pet there,” she said.

Entertainment

Expo entertainment includes the Chesapeake DockDogs, a canine aquatics competition, and entertainer Johnny Peers will lead more than a dozen dogs through impressive tricks. Visitors also have the chance to join the fun by participating in 100.7 The Bay’s “Pet & Owner Talent & Beauty Contest,” held Jan. 27, at noon.

People really can come to this show and, if they want, can spend the whole day, there is so much to do, Emge said.

Another big draw, she said, is the American Cat Fanciers Association Cat Show, held Jan. 27 and 28, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Pedigree breeders and educators will be on site both days to answer questions about specific breeds.

Local 4-H clubs also contribute to the expo, by hosting a petting zoo and a “bunny hopping” competition.

“These are all 4-H kids who love their animals, take care of their animals,” Emge said. “It gives them an opportunity to showcase what they do with their club.”
