Searching for inexpensive entertainment this holiday season? You’re in luck, because free movies are coming to the Aberdeen Proving Ground post theater in December.
This new program is supported by APG Garrison Command Sgt. Maj. Toese Tia Jr. and the Better Opportunities for Single Soldiers, or BOSS, program and APG Morale, Welfare and Recreation, or MWR.
On opening night, the blockbuster hit, “Wonder Woman” starring Gal Gadot will be shown 7 p.m., Friday, Dec. 8. On Saturday, Dec. 9, the family-friendly “The Lego Ninjago Movie” will play at 3 p.m., and the action movie “Kingsman: The Golden Circle” will be shown at 6 p.m.
Navy Motion Pictures will supply the movies, according to Nonappropriated Fund Chief Dan Carey, who helped coordinate the Memorandum of Agreement with APG. Saturday matinee movies will generally be rated “G” or “PG” to accommodate families, he added.
All MWR-eligible patrons can attend the movies, said MWR’s Byron Reasin. Information about upcoming movies will be advertised on https://www.apgmwr.com/upcoming-events.
“Typically the decisions [for movies] will be selected on a monthly basis and will be posted at least two weeks out,” Reasin said, adding that movies will usually be shown during the second and fourth weekend of each month.
BOSS Soldiers will maintain the theater and sell popcorn, sodas and other snacks to raise funds for BOSS activities, which includes community service and recreational events. No outside food and beverages will be allowed in the theater.
Tia said the movie theater is a great opportunity for Team APG to gather as a community and have some fun.
“It’s a great service that we have for our service members, our families, our DA civilians and our contractors here on Aberdeen Proving Ground,” he said.
He encourages the APG community to support the new program.
“I think movies have always been a family thing, it has always been a team building, a community event,” he said. “When we are able to offer that service that we have on Aberdeen Proving Ground, we hope that everyone embraces that, and comes out and brings their family.”
Tia added that the surround sound system in the theater has been updated, and new drink cup holders will be installed in the lower section of the theater to accommodate movie goers.
“I think [movie goers] will be surprised and very pleased,” he said.
Due to the Christmas holiday, movies will be shown the fifth weekend of December. On Friday, Dec. 29, “War for the Planet of the Apes” will play at 7 p.m.; “Spider-Man: Homecoming” will be shown at 3 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 30, followed by “American Assassin” at 6 p.m. For more information about MWR programs, visit https://www.apgmwr.com/.
